region(es) is a free annual performing arts series. Our goal is to present, commission, and promote contemporary and non-traditional artists with roots in Latin America and the Caribbean across multiple artistic disciplines. The series celebrates Latinx and Caribbean culture showcasing the highest level of artistic work. We strive to create a space for dialogue by sharing these productions with Bushwick, Brooklyn, and New York audiences.

BAM Next Wave Festival 2019

BAM’s Next Wave Festival has permanently changed the artistic landscape, featuring breakout performances and landmark productions. A bold and risky program that has defined BAM and an entire generation of artists. In October 1983, the Next Wave Festival was launched, which spotlighted exciting new works and cross-disciplinary collaborations by promising young artists. The Next Wave was groundbreaking for taking works that had previously been shown in downtown lofts and small "black box" theaters and presenting them in the exquisite 2,100-seat BAM Opera House. BAM's adventurous programming roster with emerging and established artists, including Steve Reich, Meredith Monk, Robert Wilson, Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane, and Lev Dodin.

We Can’t Even: Millenials on Film

Though often characterized as entitled, shallow narcissists obsessed with social media likes and overpriced avocado toast, the millennial generation is in fact an extraordinarily diverse group whose lives—shaped by socio-political upheaval, economic recession, and dramatic developments in technology—are only beginning to be fully understood. This wide-ranging survey explores how this complex generation has been represented on screen and how, more recently, how it has come to represent itself. What emerges is a vivid portrait of a generation finding its way and discovering its voice in an increasingly uncertain world.

Strange Desire: The Films of Claire Denis

One of a handful of filmmakers who can credibly lay claim to the title of World’s Greatest Living Director, Claire Denis creates films that speak as much through words as they do through movement, rhythm, and texture. Profound and empathetic studies of outsiderhood, immigrant alienation, the ravages of colonialism, and the mysteries of love and desire, her films are not so much watched as experienced in a full-sensory head-rush of sound and image. In anticipation of her latest philosophical reverie and first English language feature, High Life, BAM proudly presents the largest US retrospective ever of this singular cinematic mood-maker.
